The Missing

December 26, 2003

Synopsis

Ron Howard follows up his Oscar win for A Beautiful Mind with his adaptation of Tom Eidson's 1995 novel The Last Ride, set in 1880s New Mexico Territory. Jones stars as a settler who abandoned his family to live with the Apache and returns decades later to make amends with his resentful daughter Maggie (Blanchett). When Maggie's own daughter (Wood) is kidnapped by outlaws, she and her father make an uneasy truce as they set off to rescue her. Their journey through the untamed territories posed some unique problems for the film, shot almost entirely outdoors in Santa Fe. "We had one day where it was cold and snowing," Howard says, "Then it warmed up to the point where everybody took off their jackets and rolled up their sleeves. Then it started hailing. Then it snowed again, Then it got hot one more time and then just rained." Blanchett learned all of the tricks of the cowboy grade, from riding to shooting to...fashion. "The best advice my husband game me was, 'Just make sure you've got a great hat,'" she says.
